The Truman Show and Media Manipulation Essay The Truman Show is an eye-opening film, directed by Peter Weiss, about how we, as humans, are controlled by the media – advertisements, the news, movies, Facebook and anything that can help with our escape from reality. Us humans only want excitement and happiness in life and the drama of TV is a perfect way to escape from our problems and find the life we always wanted. After all, what better way to live a ‘fulfilling’ life than to live someone else’s, right? The Truman Show helps us to understand the importance of reality and the lack of it in our lives. The director used Christof, the ‘director’ of the show to symbolise the control media has over us all, Truman, the star of the show, with the life we wish ‘we’ had, and of course, the viewers, that symbolise the human population (us) who seem to do nothing but watch The Truman Show all day, every day; living no life of their own. The movie used the characters to symbolise our lives, and just ‘us’ as the human population in general. We have Christof who symbolises the media and the control it has over us, Truman who is the glorified character and the audience who does nothing but indulge in Truman’s life. Christof also symbolises TV industries and businesses, often commenting on contracts and ratings and including hidden advertising during the show. Christof uses manipulation and lies to control Truman and guarantee his alliance and ignorance, as well as the audiences respect; much like todays media industries, especially big ones like in Hollywood. We allow ourselves to be sucked into these lies and empty promises of a better life much like the audience in the show; who is often shown wasting their entire lives by doing nothing but watching the Truman show. They do so by taking a legal point of view of the argument. The people in favor of gay marriage may respect the beliefs and opinions of those that are against gay m arriage, and some may even understand where those in opposition are coming from. However, those that are for gay marriage point out that there is a separation of church and state, which makes all religious arguments invalid in regard to legal matters (Snyder, 2006). The separation of church and state makes it clear that laws are not to be created or rejected based on religious principles. This is due in part to many people not believing in or agreeing with the concepts that religions speak of. In that mindset, supporters of gay marriage feel the need to point out all of the legal aspects of gay couples being denied marriage, stating that they are being denied their legal rights when they are denied the opportunity to marry. Using the United States Constitution, more specifically the Fourteenth Amendment, gay couples and those who approve of equality for homosexuals are able to argue that they are being denied rights as American citizens when their pleas of marriage are turned down. The Fourteenth Amendment often comes into play in these arguments as the amendment states that all United States citizens will be treated equally regardless of gender, nationality, race, religion, and other factors. People in favor of gay marriage believe that this amendment also applies to sexual orientation (Gerstmann, 2007). Even though the amendment may not state it directly, the amendment exists to make sure that every citizen of the United States is treated the same way despite the characteristics that may set them apart from others. By implementing this amendment in legal arguments to legalize gay marriage, many who are for gay marriages have seen positive results, which is encouraging others to rely on their rights as citizens to demand to be treated with equality. As such, those that argue for gay marriage have more valid arguments than those that argue against gay marriage. People in favor of gay marriage have turned the argument from a religious, moralistic one to an argu ment where the legal rights of citizens are in jeopardy. Interested in wanting to see what more the clothing line had to offer, I visited the Buckle website, noticing that everything seems to fit in place and markets what it is supposed to very well. The clothing line is for young men and women who want a change from their old sho pping outlets to a more exciting, fun, cool and casual store. Throughout this book, Reymundo points out the ruthlessness in the main character that gains his power only by being that. Reymundo quotes, â€Å"I was digging up my own grave because I wanted to be accepted. I wanted to be looked up to. The only way I knew of achieving this status among the gang members was to commit as many violent acts as possible†¦ Finally those around me stopped thinking of me as a coward, R.S 114. † Reymundo shows that he acknowledges the fact that he is digging up his own grave by committing crimes. His ruthless character is shown by when he says, â€Å"achieving this status†¦was to commit as many violent acts as possible. † To reymundo, in order to gain his power he had to be looked up to, and the only way that he would be looked up to is by committing as many violent crimes as possible. In the book there are several scenes where innocent lower class people are not treated fair, because of their status. The fact that instead of having a fair trial, the lower class are harassed, beaten or arrested for a crime they did not commit shows the suppression on the lower class that is being abused by the ones with power.
